Bitcoin Rises as New US PPI Data Reflects Decreasing Inflation Concerns
Bitcoin saw positive price action on Thursday as new US Producer Price Index (PPI) data revealed an increase in producer driven inflation, though less than predicted. This softer inflation data relieved investors of worries of increased price level persistency and strengthened the belief that the US Federal Reserve would consider easier monetary policy.
These trends encouraged investment in risk-on assets, including Bitcoin. Investors interpreted the relief from inflation as an indicator that the cost of borrowing would be decreasing in the foreseeable future.
U.S. PPI Shows Cooler Inflation
Three of the four Indexes of the Producer Price Index of Final Demand for July 2022 showed no change or a decrease from previously recorded prices, whereas an increase of 0.2% was predicted. Year on year increases in producer prices were predicted to be at 4.9% and were instead recorded at 4.7%.
Prices in July of 2022 for Final Demand Goods decreased by 0.7% and prices for Final Demand Services increased by 0.2%. Lower prices of gasoline and the rest of the Final Demand Goods contributed to the lowering of producer inflation. During July 2022, prices in the Energy sector decreased by 3.1%.
Federal Reserve Rate Outlook After Inflation Data
The most recent PPI report may alter the market’s predictability of the Federal Reserve’s future interest rate changes. An overall reduction and slowdown of increasing prices at the producer level may ease the Federal Reserve’s need to adjust monetary policy to the extreme.
The balance that the Federal Reserve is trying to achieve between market growth and the inflation rate has the investor community extremely interested in these inflation numbers. If inflation continues on this downward trajectory, the investing community may begin to build into the financial markets future expected interest rate reductions.
Decrease in expected future interest rates builds a favorable financial environment for risk-based investments. This is even more true for investors involved in the digital asset community, especially Bitcoin.
Impact On Bitcoin And Crypto Market
After the inflation numbers were released, Bitcoin prices increased by 0.58% to $63,728.09. This was because the investing community in the crypto markets built into this number potential easing of inflation and less restrictive monetary policy.
Given the inflation, a drop in the expected future interest rates may build liquidity and increase investment in risk-based alternative assets, including Bitcoin.
Expectations of an easing of monetary policy typically lead to increases in interest in risk-based investments, including digital currencies.
Even with the current inflation numbers, the prices for services excluding trade, food, and energy continue to increase and were 4.7% higher than they were a year ago. Therefore, not all inflationary pressure has been alleviated and prices continue to increase.
Expectations on Bitcoin and Availability of Crypto
Although the most recent US PPI report was a good sign for Bitcoin and the larger crypto markets, upcoming economic indicators will continue to be of concern for investors. The direction of the markets will largely depend on the future printing of inflation data, employment data, and dovish signals from the Federal Reserve regarding policy.
With inflation continuing its cooling trend, it can be expected that Bitcoin’s pricing will gain from the anticipation of a relaxation of monetary policy and a decrease in interest rates. If the contradictory price pressures continue, there will be restrained easing of monetary policy and heightened volatility in the markets for all cryptocurrencies.
