After the unexpected resignation of Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland, on January 7, the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, also decided to call it quits and resign. Following this development, Elon Musk, the notable Chief Executive Officer of Tesla and SpaceX, publicly endorsed Pierre Poiliieve, Canada’s anti-Bitcoin opposition party leader, and made sure to cast his support throughout the Canada-wide elections.
With the caption, “Perfectly articulated,” Musk shared Poilievre’s video in which he discusses inflation as well as fiscal policy on X. Since finishing as the head of the government, Poilievre is recognized as one of the party frontrunners, with elections scheduled for October 20, 2025.
The crypto community, which carries Poiliieve’s hue, has been particularly taken with Poilievre’s video. He is a staunch defender of cryptocurrencies and promotes innovation.
Poilievre is famously known for calling Canada the ‘Blockchain capital of the world’ during his appearance on various podcasts revolving around digital assets while simultaneously being an active supporter of Bitcoin while campaigning to be a Prime Minister.
He endorsed Bitcoin even further by making efforts to buy Shawarma with it, similar to how the new US President Trump tried to buy burgers in New York and other Pub Key bar venues using btc.
A couple of weeks ago, Poilievre donated Bitcoin worth 100$ to the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals showing his commitment to remove taxes on crypto donations during his candidacy for the post of Prime Minister of Canada.
He has also made anti-Canadian government remarks sustaining that crypto currencies should be allowed especially bitcoin as an alternative form of transacting and it’s citizens should have this freedom.
In April 2022 concerning exorbitant pro inflation policies that proposed by Canada’s central bank, Poilievre spoke against it further stressing that other forms of currencies like bitcoin are important when tackling economic challenges.
Furthermore, a report by Reuters from April last year indicated further that Poilievre backed a proposal blocking a Canadian central bank digital currency CBCD.
As per the details provided by the prediction market Polymarket, Poilievre is positioned at an approximately 89% in winning the coming election. There is quite a margin between this percentage and the second strongest contender, Chrystia Freeland.
Freeland can be placed at around 7%. In other news, on December 11, the Vancouver City Council made a movement on Bitcoin reserves after mayor Ken Sim suggested that they should accept Bitcoin for payment of municipal services.
The motion passed on a party line with Sim and councilors from ABC Vancouver in favor and two on the Green side in opposed. Sim has also pledged to donate $10,000 in Bitcoin towards the promotion of the initiative saying that given the market and how Bitcoin has performed over the last sixteen years, it would definitely be a good asset to have in a diverse portfolio.
