Binance hack prompts White House probe as Trump warns of digital money dangers
The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange Binance was hacked for a record-breaking $6.3 billion in May and Donald Trump has expressed concerns about the dangers of digital money. The incident has drawn the attention of U.S. authorities, blockchain investigators and stablecoin issuers, adding fresh pressure on the cryptocurrency industry to beef up security and regulatory oversight.
“I’ve always felt it was a little bit dangerous to move money digitally,” Trump said from the Oval Office on Friday, October 31. Binance had said the situation is mostly under control, he said. “We’ll see,” he added. The White House also said it is investigating the incident, underscoring growing national security concerns over massive cryptocurrency thefts.
White House looks into $6.3 Billion Binance Hack
The Binance hack has been described as the biggest cryptocurrency heist in history. “Early investigation found that the attack came through at least one compromised laptop of a DevOps engineer. It is alleged that the hacker was able to gain access to a service container within 20 minutes, and began to make unauthorized withdrawals across some 10 blockchain networks.
Blockchain analytics firms Chainalysis and TRM Labs have traced the incident back to North Korea’s TraderTraitor unit, which is linked to the Lazarus Group. Investigators observed patterns of fund movement and commingling similar to previous state-sponsored cryptocurrency attacks, including Bybit and Bitget.

But Trump said the U.S. government did not yet know if North Korea was directly responsible. The FBI and U.S. Secret Service are now involved as authorities work to identify the attackers and trace the stolen assets.
Tether, Circle, Ripple freeze nearly $3 billion
Issuers of stablecoins have taken meaningful steps to curtail the movement of stolen cryptocurrency. According to reports, Tether froze around $1.57 billion in USDT and Circle froze over $800 million in USDC.
Ripple also froze some $200 million in RLUSD as part of the coordinated on-chain response.
Key Asset Freeze Figures
| Stablecoin issuer | Frozen assets |
|---|---|
| Tether (USDT) | $1.57 billion |
| Circle (USDC) | $800 million+ |
| Ripple (RLUSD) | $200 million |
| Combined total | Approximately $2.57 billion+ |
The reported figures suggest billions of dollars in potentially stolen assets have been frozen. The freezes also show how centralized stablecoin issuers can help slow down suspicious transactions during large-scale cryptocurrency security incidents.
Binance SAFU Fund: $6.3 Billion Recovery Plan
Binance chief executive Richard Teng said the exchange’s initial investigation had traced the breach to the compromised laptop. Meanwhile, co-founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) said the losses would be fully covered by Binance’s Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company reserves.
Binance has reportedly valued these available resources at about $6.34 billion, bringing the commitment to recover near the estimated loss of $6.3 billion.
Withdrawal services remained suspended during the recovery period of reporting and are expected to resume within 48 hours of the breach. Investors are watching for operational updates and planned proof-of-reserves releases from Binance as indicators of the exchange’s ability to maintain customer trust.
Crypto Market Under New Regulatory Scrutiny
The Binance hack has again been compared to the collapse of FTX. The Coinbase Premium Index for Bitcoin is at a level not seen since the FTX crisis, signaling increased market anxiety, CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju noted.
The episode has also intensified calls for better clarity on cryptocurrency regulations. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) highlighted the significance of proposed rules for crypto exchanges. The Digital Chamber has also called on Congress to formally grant the agency the authority to regulate cryptocurrency trading platforms.
The Clarity Act, which previously passed the House, is stalled in the Senate. The latest Binance episode could add to the pressure on lawmakers to establish tougher oversight.
What Investors Should Watch After Binance Hack
The wider impact on the cryptocurrency market has so far been relatively contained, despite the scale of the reported theft. Bitcoin briefly dipped to the mid- to high-$70,000 level where it found support.
There are three major developments for investors to watch now: the White House investigation, progress in Binance’s recovery and proof-of-reserves disclosures, and the possibility of renewed regulatory action through the Clarity Act.
Trump’s remarks have drawn political focus to an already significant security incident. The impact of the event on institutional trust in centralized exchanges will largely depend on the outcome of the investigation, the recovery of the stolen funds, and Binance’s ability to show improved security safeguards.
